Iran's top leader says West's sanctions in vain
Western officials have repeatedly announced that the objective of anti-Iran sanctions is to wear out the Iranian nation and force the authorities of the Islamic Republic to reconsider their political calculations, Ayatollah Khamenei said on Monday.
“But they are mistaken and will never achieve this goal.”
“The Iranian nation has chosen this victorious path with insight and has made great sacrifices and forfeited the blood of its loved ones to tread this path,” he added.
Referring to the upcoming parliamentary elections, Ayatollah Khamenei said the vote is a manifestation of people's presence in the political decision making process.
Ayatollah Khamenei said Iran's parliamentary election is also important for other Islamic nations and that is why the US and its allies are trying to disappoint the Muslim world by disrupting the vote.
Khamanei said hegemonic powers and their pawns have been making efforts to reduce the participation of Iranians in the elections, but the mass turnout of the nation will disappoint the enemy.
Homosexuals vote Tel Aviv as favourite city
Visitors on the airline's website have been asked in the past month to vote for the city with the most vibrant nightlife, best food, most interesting pride parades, best 'sand and sun' and a variety of other categories.
The final results will be published on Tuesday, but in the meantime Tel Aviv is said to be leading the main category, Best City of 2011, with 36% of the votes, followed by New York City with 16% and Toronto and Sao Paulo with 8% each.
According to Doitsh, the rise in gay tourism to Tel Aviv continued all summer and has not stopped in recent weeks and during Christmas and New Year.
Tel Aviv-Jaffa Council Member Yaniv Waizman, who holds the municipality's Tourism portfolio and advises the mayor on gay community issues, said in response: "Our success in North America is the result of the hard work of a loyal team of volunteers engaging in professional marketing and advertising efforts.
"The gay tourists arriving in Tel Aviv are the best ambassadors Israel could ask for. Their enthusiasm with the city and its residents, including the city's openness and pleasant atmosphere – leads to good results in our effort to turn Tel Aviv into a leading destination for gay tourism."
Tremors of joy as court acquits Anwar
The verdict was announced in a short judgement by Zabidin, sending tremors of joy across the court which then spilled over to the crowd.
Central to the judgement was doubt on the DNA evidence provided by the prosecution.
"I am not 100% certain that integrity of DNA samples was not compromised, and finds that it is not safe to rely on DNA evidence," said Zabidin.
"The accused is thus acquitted and discharged," he declared, after saying that the court could not rely entirely on accuser Saiful Bukhari Azlan's testimony alone due to the nature of the charge.
The judgement today was widely unexpected, though lawyers had said that it would not be a surprise judging by weaknesses in the prosecution's argument throughout the trial.
At press time, shouts of the takbir (God is Great) and "reformasi" have been reverberating outside the court complex, where the crowd had been gathered even before the Subuh prayer at the nearby Federal Territory mosque.
Israel's Gandhi statue ploy exposed
RAMALLAH, Jan 9 :The Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas’ Fatah movement on Sunday rejected the setting up of a memorial for the Indian freedom fighter Mahatma Gandhi in Jerusalem.
Dimitri Diliani, a Jerusalem-based member of Fatah’s Revolutionary Council, said that setting up the memorial “aims at confiscating lands from Palestinian residents of East Jerusalem.”
“Our objection is not against the great Indian national leader but against the Israeli intentions behind the move,” Diliani said. “The Palestinian people respect the late Indian leader for leading his people to independence by nonviolent resistance,” the Fatah official said.
Diliani said that Israel will confiscate Palestinian-owned lands in the Jabal Al-Mukaber neighborhood to set up the memorial.
Jerusalem Municipality councilman Meir Margalit, the initiator of the idea and fundraiser, said that the municipality will set up a statue and a mediation center in an area between Jabal Al-Mukaber and Jewish neighborhood of Armon HaNetsiv “to illustrate how to solve the Arab-Israeli conflict through peaceful means, as Gandhi would have wished.”
The Hebrew daily Ma’ariv said the statue will be placed in a garden with a balcony for meditation that is being designed by Argentine architect Roberto Kahanov. The report said that the statue is being contributed by the municipality of Geneva and it will be identical to the one put up by it to honor the symbol of nonviolence.
Margalit, of leftist Israeli Meretz party, told Ma’ariv that "this gesture has come too late by 64 years.” “We should have had long cherished a global scale personality that broke boundaries not only in India but worldwide."
Israel captured East Jerusalem in the June 1967 War, annexed it, and has since built settlements there that are home to more than 200,000 Israelis.
Control over the city has been seen as the most sensitive and thorniest issue of Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Palestinians hope to make East Jerusalem the capital of their future state but Israel says the city is its eternal capital.
